Jean-Michel Basquiat began his career in the late 1970s under the name SAMO in the New York street art scene. His early works consisted of provocative text fragments and symbols in urban spaces. With his transition to the established art world, he developed a distinctive style characterized by expressive figures, words, and symbolic visual structures. Themes such as identity, history, politics, jazz, sports, and street life permeate his work.
By the early 1980s, Basquiat's work was exhibited in prestigious galleries, gaining international recognition. His collaboration with Andy Warhol and his rapid rise to fame established him as a central figure in contemporary art. Despite his untimely death at the age of 27, he remains a defining icon of modern art.
This edition contains high-quality reproductions of his paintings, drawings, and sketches from his notebooks. The volume is supplemented by texts from the editor, Hans Werner Holzwarth, and an essay by the curator, Eleanor Nairne, which places Basquiat's work and development in their historical context.
