Dieses monumentale Werk versammelt eine der bedeutendsten botanischen Bildserien des frühen 18. Jahrhunderts.

Gezeigt werden rund 170 Zitrusarten in handkolorierten Kupferstichen, die weit über reine Naturdarstellung hinausgehen. Jede Tafel verbindet präzise botanische Dokumentation mit kunstvoll inszenierten Landschaften.

Der Nürnberger Kaufmann J. C. Volkamer war ein leidenschaftlicher Sammler exotischer Pflanzen. Über Jahre ließ er Zitrusgewächse aus Italien, Nordafrika und weiteren Regionen nach Nürnberg bringen und in seinen Gärten kultivieren. Aus dieser Leidenschaft entstand ein einzigartiges Werk über Zitruskultur und europäische Gartenkunst.

Die Szenen führen durch idealisierte Gärten, italienische Küstenlandschaften und imaginäre Orte, in denen Architektur und Natur miteinander verschmelzen. Zitrusbäume tragen schwere Früchte über sonnenbeschienenen Höfen, während ganze Pflanzenlandschaften wie Bühnenbilder wirken.
