Frida Kahlo – The comprehensive art book about life, work and icon of Mexican modernism

One of the most important artists of the 20th century: Frida Kahlo between pain, passion and artistic revolution

Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) is one of the most important icons of art history and Mexican modernism. This comprehensive art book presents her life and work with extraordinary depth, combining paintings, photographs, and diary entries to create an intimate portrait of a unique artist.

Known for her intense self-portraits, in which she constantly reinterprets her own face, Frida Kahlo became a global art icon. Her works address themes such as identity, body, pain, sexuality, and feminism, making her a pioneer of modern artistic expression.

After a serious accident in her youth, Kahlo began to paint and developed a distinctive style that blended reality, symbolism, and emotional expression. Her marriage to the renowned painter Diego Rivera brought her into the international art scene, where she quickly gained recognition. Artists and intellectuals such as André Breton, Picasso, Kandinsky, and Duchamp also paid tribute to her work.

This book presents Frida Kahlo's paintings in brilliant reproductions and combines them with rare photographs by renowned photographers such as Manuel and Lola Álvarez Bravo, Nickolas Muray, and Martin Munkácsi. The edition is complemented by works from private collections, some of which are accessible again for the first time or have long been lost.

In addition, drawings, diary pages and a richly illustrated biography provide a deep insight into her life, her world of thoughts and her home, the Casa Azul in Mexico City.

An essential art book for anyone who wants to understand Frida Kahlo, modern art, and the history of female artistic self-determination.

Author: Luis-Martín Lozano is an art historian specializing in modern Mexican and Latin American art. He was the director of the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico and curated numerous international exhibitions on Rivera and Kahlo.
